How I Became a Group Fitness Instructor

After giving birth and not losing the pregnancy weight as fast as I wanted to, (the Joanie Greggains tape I was using wasn't helping) I joined 24 Hour Fitness near our home. I have never been athletic, coordinated or much of a dancer but found the aerobic classes fun, easy to follow and saw results with the help of strength training. After we moved across town in 1986 I found my way to First Lady Spa.

I regularly attended classes at First Lady Spa until one day the class was cancelled because the instructor was sick. When I voiced my disappointment to the owner about the cancelled class she said, “You’re here everyday and know the routines why don’t you teach the class?”.  After laughing at the thought of me getting up in front of all those people and instructing the class and how ridiculous that sounded and the fact that surely she must be joking, said, “Yes”. After the class was over I was hired and I’ve been teaching ever since.

After I’d been teaching awhile, my confidence and enthusiasm for fitness grew.  I eventually became a personal trainer but never gave up my passion for teaching. I studied and worked hard to successfully pass the American Council on Exercise (ACE) exam and received my certifications in both group fitness and personal training. Even though I “retired” from personal training, I continue to maintain my Personal Training Certification by staying current with the latest exercise science and research.

I am currently teaching yoga and cycling classes but over the years I’ve taught Aqua, Kickboxing, Aerobic, Step, Quadrastep, Pilates, as well as several specialty classes including Seniors, Stability Ball, Rubberized Tubing and Body Bar. I’ve taught at many clubs and gyms in the Bay Area and since we've recently moved to the Sierra Foothills look forward to continueing my fitness journey. Below is a list of my certifications.
